That loud insect chirping you hear on those long summer days, those are Cicada (Cryptotympana atrata). They have been classified as the worlds loudest insect. If you have ever heard a Cicada, you will notice that they often sing in chorus, this is believed to be a defense technique. The sound makes it hard for predators to locate just one individual. Only males sing, they do this to in an attempt to attract a mate.
They spend most of their lives underground as nymphs. Depending on the species, they can live this way for 6 – 17 years. Once they emerge as adults their life span is very short in comparison, usually only living a few weeks.
As with all insects in resin, size color and positioning can vary slightly. Clear resin block measures approx. 2 3/4 inches tall by 1 1/2 inches wide.
